This video provides an overview of LED lighting technology and why we are in the middle of a disturbing first generation experiment. We ask: is the exposure to high-energy blue light too high a price to pay to save a few dollars a week? I will also share with you my family’s experience with LED lighting and what we decided to do in our own home.
0:00 LED lighting has taken the World by 0:03 storm commonly touted as the best form 0:06 of lighting due to its Energy Efficiency 0:08 many people now use it exclusively in 0:10 their homes and places of work but are 0:14 LEDs or they are cracked up to be and 0:17 does exposure to this light come with 0:19 hidden health hazards in this video we 0:22 are going to look at how our light 0:23 sources change so quickly and some of 0:26 the major drivers behind the push don't 0:29 worry I'm not going to get into the 0:31 highly technical science of light and 0:32 led technology instead the idea is to 0:35 provide an overview of the topic and 0:38 some of the potential health problems to 0:39 be aware of exposure to LEDs is on the 0:42 rise and while this video focuses on 0:45 lighting the problems cross over to 0:47 other sources such as electronic screens 0:49 I'll also share with you my family's 0:51 experience with different forms of 0:53 lighting and what we have decided to use 0:55 in our own home 1:11 most people who have been born this 1:13 Century are very accustomed to being 1:15 surrounded by light emitting diodes or 1:18 LEDs whether in toys computers screens 1:22 or Lighting in buildings but the 1:24 widespread distribution of the 1:25 technology is only as old as this 1:28 current generation even though the AL 1:30 actually dates back to 1927 when Russian 1:33 inventor ol loive produced the first 1:36 working model losev perished at the age 1:38 of 38 in 1942 during the siege of 1:42 Leningrad and the LED technology was 1:44 largely dormant until the 1960s when 1:47 they became common electronic components 1:50 by the 1970s LEDs were very cheap to 1:53 produce and widely available to entire 1:55 populations these LEDs typically looked 1:58 like this and project produced only red 2:00 light for my husband Mark red LEDs 2:03 produced hours of frustration in the 2:06 1980s with Dick Smith electronic kits 2:09 and the various projects that didn't 2:10 always work for him however his faith in 2:12 LEDs was soon restored with a trusty 2:15 power indicator on the Bailey family's 2:17 Commodore 64 and the associated data set 2:20 record light indicating a transfer rate 2:23 of 50 bytes per second going onto the 2:26 tape the problem for Led use in most 2:29 lighting applic ations was both the lack 2:31 of useful illumination levels and the 2:34 lack of white light individual red green 2:37 and blue LEDs can be combined to create 2:39 white light but the result is usually 2:41 poor it was not until 1993 that high 2:44 brightness blue LEDs were produced these 2:47 LED lamps could be coated with phosphor 2:50 which partially separates the blue light 2:52 into red and green light to create a mix 2:55 light that appeared white to our eyes as 2:57 a little segue the inventor of the blue 3:00 LED was Japanese engineer suji Nakamura 3:04 Nakamura son was working for the NAA 3:07 Corporation at the time and their 3:09 revenue soared by hundreds of millions 3:11 over the next decade largely on the back 3:14 of the blue LEDs Nakamura claimed that 3:17 his reward from the company was a 20,000 3:19 Yin bonus equivalent to around 3:22 $180 he subsequently sued NAA and was 3:25 eventually paid out around $8.1 million 3:28 while that may sound okay it was 3:30 reported that this was only enough to 3:33 cover his legal expenses as many of you 3:35 are aware that is one of the reasons why 3:38 many in our community avoid the 3:40 hopelessly fraudulent legal system the 3:43 Nakamura story has some parallels with 3:45 the story of Carrie malice the inventor 3:47 of the PCR and his employer the cus 3:50 corporation which later sold the 3:52 technology to ro you can watch my 2021 3:55 video Carrie Mullis cancel culture and 3:58 covid-19 for more on this 4:00 coming back to the development of quote 4:02 white LEDs there was further 4:05 technological advancements from the 4:07 1990s including major improvements in 4:10 Energy Efficiency the light outputs 4:12 rapidly increased and as production 4:15 costs came down commercially viable 4:17 products hit the market in the 2000s in 4:20 the 2010s LED lighting became common 4:22 place in many countries in fact many 4:25 businesses and homes switched to using 4:27 LED lighting exclusively and some some 4:29 people now insist on it before we talk 4:32 about the potential health risks of LED 4:34 lighting I'll outline our personal 4:37 experience with this relatively new 4:39 phenomenon as our regular viewers will 4:41 be aware I often rely on the instincts 4:43 of my husband Mark to First identify 4:46 problems with products whether it be 4:48 pasteurized milk sunscreen or shampoo 4:52 you can watch our videos for detailed 4:53 information on all these Topics in the 4:56 case of lighting at our previous home we 4:59 almost exclusively used halogen lamps 5:02 however a friend of ours was involved in 5:04 a company that produced LED lamps and 5:06 had been trying to convince us to switch 5:08 to them even offering to supply them for 5:11 free Mark had previously compared 5:13 different lighting modalities and was 5:15 unimpressed with LEDs finding a lower 5:18 quality illumination that produced glare 5:20 and irritation to the eyes particularly 5:23 while reading additionally there was no 5:25 way to reproduce the warmth of hogen 5:28 lights and the AL made some rooms feel 5:31 unnaturally cold the big selling point 5:34 of reduced power bills was not that 5:36 compelling as lighting was such a 5:38 minimal proportion of our energy costs 5:40 most evenings in that house we only 5:42 operated the lights for the one or two 5:44 rooms that we were using this meant only 5:46 half a dozen halogen lamps needed to be 5:48 on consuming a total of 300 wats of 5:51 power given that we had appliances such 5:53 as a 3,000 W domestic water heater and 5:56 an induction cck top and oven of around 5:59 4,000 wats we were not too worried about 6:01 the lights Additionally the supposed 6:03 drawback of the halogens producing quote 6:06 wasteful heat did not bother us as we 6:08 used the lights much more during the 6:10 colder and shorter days over winter it 6:13 was not until we were about to sell our 6:15 previous home that we replaced the 6:17 halogen lamps with the LEDs that our 6:19 friend had given us by then many new 6:22 zealanders expected energy efficient LED 6:24 lighting and we were advised that it 6:26 would probably help with the sale of the 6:28 house we did note that although the 6:30 light was not as pleasing as the 6:32 halogens it was certainly vastly 6:34 improved over the earlier generation 6:36 LEDs with much less glare we were then 6:39 wondering what to do with the 50 or so 6:42 halogen lamps that we had removed INF 6:44 fatuously decided to package them up and 6:47 put them in storage I say fortuitously 6:49 as our new home has mostly halogen 6:51 lighting including in our office studio 6:54 and all the bedrooms so we are bathing 6:56 in a warm halogen glow once again with 6:59 with at least a few Decades of spear 7:01 lamps up Our Sleeve in our experience 7:04 the comparisons between LED lamps and 7:06 other lamps can be highly misleading for 7:10 example this table featured on Wikipedia 7:13 states that a halogen lamp has a 7:15 lifespan of 1,000 hours however that is 7:18 for the high voltage versions 120 volts 7:21 in the US or 240 volts in countries like 7:24 New Zealand we run 12vt halogen lamps 7:27 via Transformers and some of them have 7:30 been going for over 15 years by contrast 7:33 in the 6 months or so that we had 7:35 exclusively LED lamps three out of 44 7:39 failed over that short period one or two 7:42 other lamps would flicker if they were 7:43 on for more than a few minutes we guess 7:46 that was due to a manufacturing fault 7:49 but it is not something we have ever 7:50 experienced with halogens in any case it 7:54 appears that other people have also 7:56 noted concerns with the performance and 7:58 claimed cost benefits of LED lighting 8:01 another annoying effect of LED lighting 8:04 is as they get older they start to 8:05 flicker so using this light meter to 8:08 measure Lux so you can see we're getting 8:10 a reading of about anywhere from 5 to 15 8:14 20 anywhere around this light fixture so 8:18 on the opposite side of the room we've 8:20 installed new light bulbs here and we're 8:22 getting measurements of about 115 so as 8:26 you can see light bulbs that are a year 8:27 to a year and a half old are a fraction 8:31 of the light coming out of the new ones 8:33 so you can't go up and replace one light 8:35 bulb here and one light bulb there when 8:37 they blow out you have to replace them 8:38 all or you're going to have inconsistent 8:40 light around your building with regard 8:43 to the health risks of LED lighting one 8:45 of the major concerns is the nature of 8:48 blue light the most natural form of 8:50 light comes from the Sun and blue light 8:52 is only a minority component of the 8:55 source there are numerous benefits that 8:57 come with exposure to sunlight but the 8:59 massive increase in blue light through 9:02 LED lighting as well as smartphones 9:04 computer screens and TVs is unlikely to 9:07 come with any benefits one of the major 9:10 short-term adverse effects that has been 9:12 recorded is the disruption of optimal 9:15 sleep cycles for example this study 9:18 published in 2015 looked at the negative 9:20 effects of using light emitting 9:22 electronic devices before bid although 9:25 not LED lighting per se it is still a 9:28 form of short wave length light and 9:30 constantly disrupted sleep can lead to 9:32 all sorts of health issues as early as 9:35 1999 an experiment demonstrated retinal 9:38 damage in rats exposed to Blue Light 9:41 over 3 to 6 hours however the levels for 9:43 damage to human eyes and problems such 9:46 as macular degeneration and cataracts is 9:49 not as well described Additionally the 9:52 risk is probably higher for those 9:53 staring at screens all day rather than 9:56 simply being in a room with LED lighting 9:59 a further factor is the time of day of 10:01 the exposure with nighttime exposure 10:03 likely to cause more health problems 10:05 that go beyond just the effects on the 10:08 eyes when it comes to the materials that 10:10 LED lamps are made of they are touted as 10:13 being safe and inert when intact however 10:17 those in the field have noted some 10:19 suspicious findings in at least some 10:21 versions so as is the case with all 10:23 Plastics when this bulb is in here and 10:25 it heats up all the plasticizers the BPA 10:29 bphs BCBS pcbs or whatever they have are 10:34 here because this is an explosionproof 10:36 casing it was 10:38 never allowed to get out and it settled 10:41 on the glass obviously we have to clean 10:43 it but if this wasn't in here and you 10:47 had 200 of these in your building all 10:49 these toxins are coming out into your 10:52 environment that can't possibly be 10:55 healthy I'm not going to deeply dissect 10:58 some of the studies that have been done 10:59 in humans and animals because we are 11:02 still in the middle of a first 11:04 generation experiment when it comes to 11:06 longer term exposure and while I do not 11:09 endorse anything the European commission 11:11 says including their so-called green 11:13 policies even their 2018 report on the 11:16 subject conceded that reliable 11:18 information on the dose response 11:20 relationship for adverse health effects 11:21 for the healthy general public is not 11:24 available in the scientific literature 11:26 for all wavelengths emitted by Led 11:28 devices since the use of LED technology 11:31 is still evolving the committee 11:34 considers that it is important to 11:36 closely monitor the risk of adverse 11:38 health effects from long-term LED use by 11:40 the general population meanwhile 11:43 governments have thrown caution into the 11:45 wind and have been pushing LEDs through 11:47 promotions subsidies or even outright 11:50 Banning of older lighting modalities for 11:53 example in recent years the Indian 11:55 government has distributed 370 11:59 million LED bulbs to the citizens for 12:02 free that's right apparently governments 12:05 have the ability to do things at no cost 12:08 to anyone it's a write off for them how 12:11 is it a write off they just write it off 12:15 write it off what in New Zealand there 12:17 is a website that advises us that LEDs 12:19 are the best bulbs for your home the 12:23 best Jerry the best we can also see that 12:25 it is a website run by the New Zealand 12:28 government 12:29 apparently they want us to reduce our 12:31 energy consumption because it is causing 12:34 climate change the New Zealand 12:36 state-owned national electricity grid is 12:38 also struggling to keep up with 12:41 demand which has actually been fairly 12:43 stagnant for the past two decades of 12:45 note the population of New Zealand has 12:47 gone up far more over the same time 12:50 period it's all a bit of a mystery in a 12:52 country that has abundant natural 12:54 resources and despite recent immigration 12:57 still a relatively low population 12:59 density but perhaps as Milton Freedman 13:01 once said if the government were to take 13:03 over the Sahara Desert there would be a 13:06 shortage of sand in 5 years anyway like 13:09 anything that governments are promoting 13:11 or attempting to legislate the sudden 13:14 Push by them around the world to roll 13:16 out LED lighting should be viewed with 13:19 skepticism it is coming under the guise 13:22 of Energy Efficiency and saving the 13:24 environment themes that have been 13:26 co-opted by the global Criminal crcy as 13:29 researchers such as Paul kinck have 13:32 exposed please check out Paul's 13:34 Publications and you can watch my video 13:36 presentation of his essay the corruption 13:38 is real and sickening for more on these 13:41 nefarious entities that claim to be 13:43 saving the Earth don't get me wrong our 13:46 family does not dismiss LED lighting 13:48 completely we have found that it is a 13:50 game Cher for outdoor lighting and have 13:52 run underground lines for over 100 m to 13:56 power many lights that provide useful 13:58 illumination 13:59 something that could not be done with 14:01 other lights over those distances we 14:03 also have an LED torch that we call 14:05 night Sun due to its ridiculous ability 14:08 to light up huge areas however these 14:11 lighting sources are only used 14:13 infrequently and we do not spend much 14:14 time exposed to them additionally we can 14:17 also sympathize with people who run 14:19 off-grid homesteads or remote cabins and 14:22 are completely dependent on limited 14:24 solar power generation for my family we 14:27 have elected to use the light that we 14:29 prefer and that is mostly from halogen 14:32 lamps with regard to the potential 14:34 Health dangers of LED lighting due to 14:36 the lack of long-term information we 14:38 stick to the precautionary principle as 14:41 we have done with Wi-Fi we generally 14:43 avoid it as much as possible inside our 14:45 home it may cost more but saving money 14:48 should not be the only consideration 14:50 when your health is on the line the eye 14:53 irritation and headaches we have 14:54 sometimes experienced with LED lighting 14:57 has been enough for us to be weary of 14:58 the much hyped technology we have to 15:01 accept that we are all being exposed to 15:04 more blue light than ever before but we 15:06 can certainly take steps to mitigate 15:08 against it keep the conversation going 15:10 in the comments by sharing your 15:13 experiences with different light sources 15:15 as well as any further insights you have 15:17 into LED 15:20 technology if you enjoyed this video 15:23 please visit
